How much fibre per day comes down to two published numbers: the Institute of Medicine's Adequate Intake of 38 g for men and 25 g for women aged 19–50,1 and the rate those numbers were built from, 14 g per 1,000 kcal. The second form is the one that fits a calorie tracker, because it moves with the calorie target instead of assuming a typical intake.
This article gives both forms, shows why the rate is the better rule for anyone with a personal calorie target, and clears up how fibre sits inside the carbohydrate count. It describes food and reference values only.
Two ways to set the target
By sex and age. The Institute of Medicine sets an Adequate Intake (AI) — used when the evidence does not support a full RDA — for total fibre:1

By calories. The same report derived those values from a rate of 14 g per 1,000 kcal applied to the median energy intake of each group. That is why men's number is higher: they eat more calories on average, not because the rate differs.
In plain terms: the sex-and-age table is the rate rule with typical calories already filled in.
Why 14 g per 1,000 kcal scales with intake
A calorie tracker knows something the population table does not — your calorie target. Applying the rate to it gives a fibre number that fits your diet rather than the average diet:

The rate matters most at the ends. A woman on a 1,300 kcal losing target reaches the rate at 18 g, seven grams under the population value; a man eating 3,500 kcal to gain reaches it at 49 g. The research lead behind this article quotes a practical working band of 20–50 g per day, which is simply the rate applied across ordinary calorie targets.
This is arithmetic, not a trial result: the rate is the reference body's rule, and the table only multiplies it out.
Fibre, net carbs and honest tracking
Fibre is a carbohydrate, so on most labels and food databases it is included inside "total carbohydrate". MacroDiet's carbohydrate target is total carbohydrate, so fibre is already counted — there is no separate fibre budget to add on top.
Two consequences follow:
Energy. Fibre is assigned about 2 kcal/g in the FAO conversion system rather than the 4 kcal/g used for other carbohydrate,2 which is one of the reasons protein × 4 + carbs × 4 + fat × 9 rarely matches the calorie line on a label. A day with 35 g of fibre carries roughly 70 kcal less than the 4-per-gram arithmetic suggests. Why macros don't add up goes through the rest of that gap.
Net carbs. Subtracting fibre from total carbohydrate gives "net carbs". It is a different reading of the same food, not a different target, and it only changes the bookkeeping if you also change the target to a net-carb one. Mixing the two — a total-carb target logged with net-carb foods — under-counts carbohydrate by the fibre grams every day. Pick one and log consistently; consistency is what the expenditure estimate depends on.
In plain terms: fibre lives inside your carb number. Count it the same way every day and the rest of the arithmetic takes care of itself.
