To reverse diet after a cut, set a very slow gain goal and watch the trend weight — that is the whole method, once the marketing is stripped off. A reverse diet is a gradual increase in intake at the end of a deficit rather than a jump straight back to old habits. In calculator terms it is the gain branch at the conservative rate: for a 70 kg person, a 231 kcal surplus over the post-diet maintenance estimate, adjusted as the trend responds. This is arithmetic, not a trial result, and the claims made for the method deserve a careful look before the recipe.

What reverse dieting claims

The popular pitch is that adding calories back slowly lets expenditure climb to meet them, so you end up eating more at the same body weight than you did before the diet. Part of that is straightforwardly true and part of it is not supported by anything we can cite.

The simple version — a slow gain goal

The calorie calculator has a gain branch that mirrors the loss branch exactly: pick a rate, and the surplus is weight × rate × 7,700 ÷ 7, capped at 35% of TDEE.

For a 70 kg person whose post-diet maintenance is estimated at 2,200 kcal:

A reverse diet uses the top row. Two adjustments to the standard gain workflow make it behave like a reverse diet rather than a bulk:

  1. Set the goal weight far enough away that a water blip cannot end it. If the goal is "gain 1 kg" and the first week's glycogen refill adds 1.5 kg to the scale, the goal is "reached" before anything real has happened. A goal several kilograms away is a placeholder; the intention is to stop when the trend says so, not when the number is hit.
  2. Step the surplus, if you prefer. Some people add the 231 kcal at once; others add 50–100 kcal a week until they reach it. The endpoint is the same. Stepping is slower and gives more readings; the single step gets you to maintenance-plus-a-little sooner. Neither is wrong.

Protein stays where it was during the diet or slightly lower (the calculator drops the 0.2 g/kg loss bump on a gain goal); the added calories arrive mostly as carbohydrate and fat in the diet style's ratio.

In plain terms: it is a bulk at the slowest setting, with a placeholder goal and your attention on the trend line.

What to watch (trend weight, not scale weight)

The scale is the wrong instrument for the first two weeks of a reverse diet. Higher intake means more carbohydrate, more glycogen with its water, more food in transit — the scale can jump a kilogram or two while tissue has barely changed. Why the scale jumps overnight covers the sources.

The trend weight — MacroDiet uses an exponential moving average with a 7-day half-life — absorbs most of that. Read it over three to four weeks and compare against the plan:

  • Trend rising at about the planned rate (`0.2 kg` a week at 70 kg). The surplus is real and expenditure has settled. You have found maintenance-plus-231; drop the surplus to sit at maintenance, or keep it if a slow gain is the goal.
  • Trend flat or rising more slowly than planned. Expenditure rose to meet some of the added intake — the recovery the method is designed to reveal. Re-run the calculator with the higher intake as the new maintenance estimate and, if you wish, add the next step.
  • Trend rising faster than planned after the first fortnight. The maintenance estimate was too high, or the water rebound is still working through. Hold the intake steady for another two weeks before changing anything.

The check-and-adjust cadence is two weeks; the decision window is three to four. That is the same rhythm as reading a plateau, because it is the same problem in reverse.
