A macro calculator and a macro tracking app answer two different questions. The calculator answers "what does someone like me typically burn?"; the app, given weeks of your logs, can answer "what do *I* actually burn?". Whether you need the second one depends on how long you will log and how much a few hundred kilocalories matter to your plan. Zyra builds MacroDiet and the free calculators on this site, so we have a stake in both answers; what follows is the arithmetic, which does not care who built the tool.

What a calculator can know

A calculator knows five things because you typed them: weight, height, age, sex, and a guess at your activity. From those it runs a population equation. MacroDiet's macro calculator uses Mifflin-St Jeor for BMR — 10·kg + 6.25·cm − 5·age + 5 for a male profile, −161 for a female profile — and multiplies by an activity factor of 1.2 / 1.375 / 1.55 / 1.725 for 0 / 1–3 / 4–6 / 7+ training days, nudged by −0.05 / 0 / +0.1 for a sedentary, moderate or very active day outside training.

Worked example, reproducible on the calculator: 80 kg, 180 cm, 35 years, male profile, 1–3 training days, moderate NEAT. BMR is 800 + 1,125 − 175 + 5 = 1,755 kcal. The multiplier is 1.375. TDEE is round(1,755 × 1.375) = 2,413 kcal. A moderate rate of 0.5% of body weight per week is 0.4 kg, which at 7,700 kcal/kg is 440 kcal/day; the deficit cap of 35% × 2,413 = 845 kcal is nowhere near, the floor of 1,500 kcal is nowhere near, and the target comes out at 1,973 kcal.

Now notice what the calculator cannot know. Change only the NEAT toggle — the one input that is pure self-report — and the same person's TDEE reads 2,325 (sedentary) or 2,589 (very active). That is a 264 kcal swing from one honest guess. The calculator has no way to tell which guess was right, because nothing you typed is a measurement of energy.

In plain terms: a calculator is the average of people who share your five numbers. You are one of them, somewhere in the spread.

What only your logs can tell

The only thing that can check the estimate is what actually happens. Energy balance is an accounting identity: calories in − calories out = change in stored energy. Rearranged, calories out = calories in − change in stored energy. A tracking app has "calories in" from your food log and can estimate "change in stored energy" from how your trend weight moves over a few weeks. Solve, and expenditure falls out — yours, not the population's.

This is arithmetic, not a trial result, and it has three requirements a calculator does not. It needs logged intake, complete enough that a missed meal does not masquerade as a low-expenditure day. It needs weigh-ins, frequent enough that a trend can be separated from daily water noise. And it needs time: a weight trend over a week is mostly noise; over three or four weeks it is signal. MacroDiet's own expenditure page states its version of the rule — 3 consecutive logged days to start updating, then 3 food days and 1 weigh-in in every 7-day period to keep updating — and, to be plain about status, the engine behind those updates is still in development, so today the app shows the calculator's number.

The error you start with either way

The honest part: on day one, the app is the calculator. Both begin with the same formula, so both begin with the same error. How big is it? The BMR equation alone is typically 100–200 kcal/day off for an individual — the spread inside the population the equation was fitted to. The activity multiplier then buckets a continuous life into four steps and adds a self-report on top. MacroFactor's help centre, explaining why its own logged-expenditure figure disagrees with calculators, puts the average error of a TDEE calculator at about 325 kcal/day, with reasonably large errors (over 250 kcal) at least half the time and about 20% of people off by 500–1,000 kcal/day1.

Put that against the worked example. A 325 kcal average error on a 2,413 kcal estimate is about 13% — most of the 440 kcal deficit the plan asked for. For someone in the unlucky fifth, the "deficit" could be maintenance, or twice what was intended. Neither tool escapes this on day one. Only one of them can find out.

In plain terms: the calculator's number is a good first guess with a wide error bar; the app's job is to shrink the bar, and it can only do that with your logs.

When a calculator is enough

A calculator is the right tool when the stakes are short and the direction matters more than the number. A few weeks of eating roughly to a target, a first look at what 1.6 g/kg of protein means in food, a sanity check on a plan someone else gave you, a target for a training block where body weight is not the goal — for all of these, the calorie calculator, macro calculator or protein calculator gives you the same starting number an app would, free, in the browser, with nothing sent anywhere.

A tracking app earns its place when three things are true at once: you will log for weeks, not days; the outcome depends on the number being right within a couple of hundred kilocalories; and you would rather the tool correct itself than adjust by feel. A long diet, a deliberate gain, a plateau you cannot explain — those are the cases where a starting error of 325 kcal compounds into weeks of wrong targets, and where a weight trend against logged intake is the only instrument that can see it.

There is a middle path most people miss: use the calculator, then keep a weight log and a rough food log yourself. If the scale trend disagrees with the plan after three or four weeks, the calculator was off — adjust the target by the gap. That is the app's algorithm, done by hand, and it works for anyone willing to do the arithmetic.
