The scale doesn't match the mirror because it weighs every kind of tissue the same, while the mirror — and a tape measure — respond to which kind it is. A kilogram of fat tissue and a kilogram of lean tissue are the same on a scale and very different in how much energy they store, how much room they take up and where they sit. When one goes down and the other goes up, weight can hold still while your shape changes. This article gives the arithmetic and a simple monthly check.

Two tissues, very different calorie densities

The figure everyone learns is that a pound of fat is about 3,500 kcal — roughly 7,700 kcal per kilogram — and that is the value the calorie deficit calculator uses to turn a weekly rate into a daily deficit. Hall's analysis of that rule notes it assumes what is lost is mostly fat, and that lean body mass has a much lower energy density than body fat, so the true deficit per kilogram depends on the mix of tissue lost1.

The commonly used tissue values make the point concrete:

Now do the exchange. Suppose over ten weeks you lose 1 kg of fat and add 1 kg of lean tissue, and the scale reads exactly what it did on day one.

A real, sustained deficit of about 110 kcal a day, and a scale that says nothing happened. Double the exchange — 2 kg each way — and it is about 217 kcal a day, still invisible to the scale. This is arithmetic on approximate tissue values, not a measurement of anyone; how much of this exchange a given person achieves is a separate question this article does not answer.

In plain terms: the scale counts kilograms; your shape and your energy balance care which kilograms.

What the tape shows that the scale cannot

Fat and lean tissue also differ in where they go. Lean tissue is largely muscle and sits on the limbs and back; fat is stored in depots that, for most people, include the waist and hips. So the same exchange that leaves the scale flat tends to move the tape in two directions at once: the waist down a little, an arm or thigh up a little.

That is why the compare screen in Zyra Workouts is built around girths rather than weight. Over a 30-day window it takes the first and last reading of each site and reports the change in centimetres and as a percentage (the procedure and the seven sites are in how to take body measurements). A trend weight that moved −0.2 kg in a month says "nothing much"; a waist at −1.5 cm and an arm at +0.5 cm over the same month says something did happen and roughly what.

Two cautions keep the tape honest. Day-to-day girth differences of about a centimetre are technique and timing, so compare over weeks, not days. And a tape cannot tell water from tissue any better than a scale can, so measure under the same morning conditions every time.

A simple check every 30 days

Three numbers, once a month, answer "is my shape changing?" better than thirty daily weigh-ins read as verdicts.

  1. Trend-weight slope. Compare today's trend value with the trend value 30 days ago. The 7-day-half-life smoothing (see trend weight vs scale weight) has fully absorbed anything that started more than three weeks ago, so the difference is real.
  2. Waist. Navel height, morning, relaxed — the 30-day compare row.
  3. One limb. Arm or thigh, same side, same flexed-or-relaxed choice — the 30-day compare row.

Then read them together:

None of these rows is a verdict on the person; they are the combinations three numbers can form, and each points at a different next question for the nutrition or training plan. If the trend is flat and the tape is flat too, the honest reading is "no measurable change this month", which is also information.

The short version

Fat tissue stores about 9,400 kcal per kilogram, lean tissue about 1,800, and the scale cannot tell them apart. Losing a kilogram of one while gaining a kilogram of the other is a real deficit of roughly 7,600 kcal with no change in weight — which is exactly the case where the mirror and the scale disagree. Once a month, put the 30-day trend-weight slope next to a waist and a limb girth and read the three together. Training and nutrition decisions follow from that, not from one morning's number.
