Dumbbell vs barbell bench press: in the Zyra Workouts catalog they work the same muscles, get the same rep and RIR targets and count identically toward your weekly chest total. What actually changes is mechanical and practical — how the load is held, how it is logged, how long the rest timer runs, and above all how big the next step is. This piece lays those differences side by side using the two catalog rows: the dumbbell bench press and the barbell bench press.
Muscles worked
Both rows: primary chest, secondary triceps and shoulders, category compound. One working set of either adds 1 to chest and 0.5 to each secondary. Nothing in the muscle map or the weekly-sets count distinguishes them.
Mechanically there is one real difference. A bar joins your hands, so the two sides share a single path and one side can quietly do more than the other. Dumbbells travel independently: each hand carries exactly its own load through its own arc, and the arc can come inward at the top in a way a bar cannot. That is a description of the equipment, not an EMG claim, and the catalog does not turn it into a different muscle list.

Step size: 2 kg per hand vs 2.5 kg on the bar
This is the difference you feel most, so here is the arithmetic. The engine's step rule (stepFor) is:
- barbell: twice the smallest plate in your gym profile. With the default set (20/15/10/5/2.5/1.25 kg) that is
2 × 1.25 = 2.5 kgadded to the bar — a 3.1% jump on 80 kg. - dumbbell: a fixed
2 kg, because that is how most racks are spaced. It applies per hand, so the total load moves by4 kg— an 8.3% jump on a pair of 24 kg dumbbells (48 kg total).
The same "beat the ceiling" event therefore produces a relatively bigger jump on dumbbells:

In plain terms: on dumbbells you tend to spend more sessions adding reps before the weight moves, because each weight move is proportionally larger. That is arithmetic, not a training-effect claim. If your rack has 1 kg increments, the engine still steps 2 kg — the step is fixed, not read from your rack.
One more practical difference: the barbell has a plate-inventory check. If the recommended load cannot be built from the plates you own, the wand turns red and asks for a nearby weight. Dumbbells, machines and cables are assumed adjustable, so their wands never go red.
Setup and execution
The cues shared by both: shoulder blades together and down, feet planted, lower under control to the chest line, press back over the shoulders, keep the wrists stacked over the elbows.
Dumbbell-specific: bring the dumbbells to your knees seated, lie back with them in one motion, and finish the set by sitting up with them rather than dropping them from the top. Barbell-specific: even grip using the rings, unrack to a locked position before the first rep, rack only after the last one.

RIR is reps in reserve — how many more reps were left when the set stopped. @RIR 2 means the set ended two reps short of failure. The rep ceiling is the engine's "expected max": the midpoint of the range plus the RIR target, round((repMin + repMax) / 2) + rir. Beat the ceiling and the load steps up next time.
