Progressive overload is the principle that to keep getting stronger you have to keep doing measurably more than you did before — more weight, more reps, more sets, or a higher estimated one-rep max on the same exercise. The word that matters is *measurably*. Overload is not a feeling of effort; it is a number in a log that is bigger than the number from last time.

The four ways to add load

"More" has four practical forms, and a good log tracks all of them:

The first two change the estimated 1RM, which is why e1RM is the app's headline progress metric (see how to track strength progress). The third changes weekly volume without changing the best set. The fourth is a warning row: a set that got harder at the same numbers is the opposite of progress, and it is the pattern the fatigue model looks for.

In plain terms: heavier, or more reps, or more sets. Pick one per exercise per session, and write it down.

Why the equipment decides the step

How much weight to add is a question about the gym, not the lifter. The engine's step function is short enough to quote in full:

  • bodyweight0 kg (there is no load to move)
  • barbell2 × smallest plate in your inventory, falling back to 2.5 kg if no inventory is set
  • dumbbell, machine, cable2 kg

The barbell rule is why the smallest plate you own matters more than any other. With 1.25 kg plates the step is 2.5 kg, which is 2.5% of a 100 kg lift and 5% of a 50 kg one. If your smallest plate is 2.5 kg, the step doubles to 5 kg, and a 50 kg overhead press is being asked to jump 10% at a time — a jump the reps often cannot back up. Recording your plates in the gym profile is therefore not housekeeping; it changes every barbell recommendation you get. The plate calculator shows what a given step looks like on the bar.

Fixed dumbbells and selectorised stacks usually move in 2 kg (or 5 lb) increments, and the app assumes that rather than modelling every rack. Where the real increment is larger — a dumbbell rack that goes 10, 12.5, 15 — the app still recommends the 2 kg step and snaps it to the nearest multiple; if that load does not exist in your rack, pick the nearest one and log what you actually lifted. Recommendations are recomputed from the log, so an honest log corrects the model on the next session.

Every recommended weight is snapped to the step: round(weight / step) × step. A 2.5 kg step keeps loads on the 2.5 grid so there is never a 101.3 kg to build.

In plain terms: the step is the smallest change you can physically make to the load, and the app never asks for less or more than one of them at a time.

Why reps count as overload

The temptation is to treat only the weight as real progress. Arithmetic says otherwise. Going from 100 kg × 8 to 100 kg × 9 raises the Brzycki estimate from 124.1 kg to 128.6 kg — a 3.6% jump in e1RM, larger than the 2.5% you would get from adding a 2.5 kg plate pair at 8 reps (102.5 kg × 8 = 127.2 kg). Reps are not the consolation prize; on most rep ranges they are the bigger lever per step.

That is exactly why the engine adds weight only after the reps have gone past the ceiling. The reps are the evidence that the weight is ready to move, and they are progress in their own right while they climb. It is also why bodyweight exercises are not a special case in the log: a step of 0 kg means the only lever is reps, and a pull-up that went from 6 to 8 is overload by the same measure as a bench press that went from 100 to 102.5.

Two limits, stated plainly. First, reps stop being a clean signal in long sets — above 12 the app switches e1RM formulas because the estimate gets fuzzy (see Brzycki vs Epley). Second, "more" cannot be every session for ever; when sets go backwards for a stretch, the pattern is covered in training plateau or time to deload. None of this is a trial result — it is what the numbers do when you change one variable at a time.

The short version

Progressive overload is doing measurably more on the same exercise: more weight, more reps, more sets, or a higher e1RM. A rep at the same weight is real overload, often more than a plate pair. Write down weight, full reps and RIR for every working set, because overload you did not record is overload you cannot check.
